Why do they tell you to use pepper spray in a bear attack? Why not carry a gun and shoot it if it attacks?

I always carry my firearm….I’m not relying on some pepper spray while hiking to fend off a bear… I understand attacks are rare, but still…
I just finished reading ‘The Grizzly Maze’, the story of how Timothy (Dexter) Treadwell, the ‘famous’ Bear Whisperer and leader of the ‘Grizzly People’ of the 90′s, and his female companion were killed and eaten by an Alaskan Grizzly/Brown inside Kodiak Federal Sanctuary area in 2003, where firearms are not permitted. Both sound rather silly. Pepper spray may stop it from being able to see well. A gunshot would probably just make it mad unless you pack a Desert Eagle in .50 caliber, a 4 gauge shotgun (which is illegal), or a 454 Cassoul. I would suggest bringing a buddy who can’t run as fast as you.
Also, America is full of such pansies now, most people are going to be offended that someone suggest they carry a firearm or would be offended that you value your life more than the bear’s life…. just the way people are now.

I believe it is illegal to carry a firearm in national parks and most state parks. This gives very few legal options. Pepper spray is probably the best choice.
But, I understand your feelings. I feel naked if I don’t have a gun handy.

Pepper spray is going to affect the bears vision and its breathing. If it can’t see or breath it is going to run away to recover. If you shoot the bear you will probably only wound it and tick it off more. Unless you use a powerfull enough round to put it down on the first shot.

The pepper spray apparently burns it eyes messes up it snose .Hopefully that gives a person time to get away or out of bears sight when it clears. Also most people get terrified when charged or even see a bear. For them a gun would be worse as if wounlded the could really get mad. Also unless a experienced bear hunter dand you know where to shoot if you really have to.DONT.Evenshot through the heart a bear can still cover upwards of 200 yards. This is because unlike humans a bear s heart only beats approx. once a minute.which means he has timeto get along way before blkood lose an shock hit them.Especialy if mad and only wounded.

60 years hunting mainly bear and moose, owned trap line and lived and worked in bush at least 8 months a year. Also been there done that . Bears scare anyone with brains
Pepper spray is more apt to hit the bear, because of its wide spray and often has an immediate effect. The bullet has to hit something immediately vital to stop the bear.

You have a greater chance of surviving or avoiding a confrontation with a bear if you use the pepper spray first, and resort to using a firearm as a last resort only……

Always carry the pepper spray. I have noticed that when bears eat people they prefer to lightly pepper them first so they taste better. It also helps when we are looking for the people that have been eaten when we can smell peppery bear do-do. ps. It is a good idea not to shoot the bear either as it tends to make them mad.

pepper spray will momentarily incapacitate the bear, giving you a chance to get as far away from that bear as possible, because its going to be mad. i agree on just carrying a gun with you;its much more reliable

Pepper spray can ironically attract bears.

When was the last time you went hiking or camping in a National or State Park? Even tho they are ‘OUR’ parks(paid for by ‘OUR’ tax dollars), it is illegal to possess or carry firearms in ANY of ‘OUR’ U.S. and almost all State Parks…….
