Charcoal does not …
Charcoal does not take out parasites or bacteria.

It surely is a good …
It surely is a good idea, but with a water purifier, you don´t need to keep the fire.

Since fire boils at least one liter of water in less than 3 minutes or so, you could say you only need one decent fire to have a good water supply for the day. But what about if you can´t make fire anymore, for instance, a strong rain falls and everything turns wet?

Anything has it´s use, including a water purifier.

if you’re building …
if you’re building a fire anyway, why not just boil the water?

Depends on your …
Depends on your altitude but if it’s high enough I wouldn’t bother with purifying the water, I would drink it straight off the brook.

What if there was …
What if there was an old mine near by that was leaking heavy metals or toxic chemicas in the water will you still be safe using this and then boiling?
